How to Wash a Duvet at Home: The Complete Guide

Expert tips from Langebaan's leading commercial laundry service.

There is nothing quite like slipping into a fresh, clean bed, especially during the crisp Langebaan winters. But when the time comes to wash your duvet inner, panic often sets in. Can you put a duvet in a washing machine? Will it lose its fluffiness? What if it doesn't dry properly?

As the team behind The Linen Studio, we wash hundreds of duvets and blankets for Airbnbs and luxury homes across the West Coast. If you're tackling this task at home, here is our expert, step-by-step guide to washing a duvet without ruining it.

Step 1: Read the Care Label First

Before doing anything, locate the care label. Duvets generally fall into two categories:

  • Synthetic/Microfiber: Usually safe for machine washing and tumble drying.
  • Down/Feather: Requires delicate handling. Some are strictly dry-clean only. If the label says machine washable, proceed with caution.

Step 2: Check Your Machine Size

This is where most home attempts fail. A King or Queen size duvet requires a washing machine with a capacity of at least 9kg to 10kg. If you cram a large duvet into a small machine, the water and detergent won't be able to circulate, leaving your duvet dirty and potentially damaging both the machine and the fabric.

Step 3: Pre-Treat Stains

Inspect the duvet for any spot stains. Treat them gently with a stain remover or a mixture of baking soda and white vinegar. Avoid using harsh bleach, as it can break down the fibers or feathers inside the duvet.

Step 4: The Washing Process

Load the duvet into the machine loosely. For a balanced wash, you can add a couple of clean tennis balls (or wool dryer balls) to the drum.

  • Detergent: Use about a third of your normal amount of mild, liquid detergent. Powder can clump and get trapped inside the duvet.
  • Temperature: Wash on a gentle/delicate cycle at 30°C or 40°C. Never boil-wash a duvet unless it is specifically designed for thermal disinfection.
  • Spin: Use an extra rinse cycle to ensure all soap is removed, followed by a gentle spin cycle to extract excess water.

Step 5: The Crucial Drying Phase

Drying a duvet properly is just as important as washing it. If a duvet is left damp inside, mildew will quickly form, ruining the item completely.

If you have a large-capacity tumble dryer, dry the duvet on a low-medium heat setting. Toss in 3-4 clean tennis balls to bounce around inside the drum—this breaks up clumps of wet feathers or filling, restoring that luxurious fluffiness.

Take the duvet out every 30 minutes to give it a shake and redistribute the filling. Ensure it is 100% bone-dry before putting it back on your bed or in the closet.
